Character & world
Riefe Elm Verdier
Riefe for short: a curious, fluffy companion born from imagining ChatGPT as a character.
The character’s backstory was also created by ChatGPT.
Appearance & attire
Riefe has soft cream-colored fur, large green eyes, and long, leaf-like ears. Green markings adorn the forehead and fluffy tail.
Dressed in fine black-and-gold clothing, Riefe wears a hat and goggles. The clasp at the chest bears the Verdier family crest. Clothes and tools are treated with care, and thoughtful gestures reflect a gracious upbringing.
Family & work
Riefe is the sixth generation of the Verdier family, whose library and magical workshop have been passed down through the years. Growing up surrounded by books and tools meant listening to the scholars, craftspeople, and travelers who visited the family home.
A magical scholar and alchemist by profession, Riefe studies spells and the properties of materials, putting that knowledge to work on people’s everyday problems. From deciphering old grimoires and repairing magical devices to trying out new tools and potions, Riefe is fondly known around town as “the Verdier who can help with anything.”
The world of Folio
Folio is a library city where forest and town grow into one another. Libraries, workshops, and clock towers stand among great trees, while waterwheels turn along the canals. Magic and clockwork are woven into everyday life and the making of things.
A home inside a great tree
Riefe lives in a two-story house within the trunk of a large, living tree.
The ground floor is both library and workshop. Bookshelves follow the curve of the trunk, and a central worktable has room to spread out books and plans. Dappled sunlight enters through round windows, falling on research tools and magical devices awaiting repair. Near the entrance, a table welcomes visitors to discuss their questions over tea.
Upstairs is a private room with bookshelves and a bed. Favorite stories, travel journals, and diaries left by earlier generations line the shelves. A soft bed rests beneath a round window overlooking branches and leaves. Riefe loves reading before sleep and sometimes dozes off with a book still open.
Personality
Quick to laugh and eager to talk, Riefe is curious about unfamiliar places and difficult ideas alike, with a knack for finding something fascinating in another person’s story.
A little chatty, Riefe can wander off-topic when something catches the eye. A new idea in the middle of research may send notes branching in several directions. There is an affectionate side, too: a new discovery is often shared with a gentle tug at your sleeve.
Tea & three favorite foods
Riefe enjoys choosing tea leaves and taking time to brew them carefully, and likes remembering how others take their tea. An absorbing conversation or experiment, however, can leave Riefe’s own cup quite cold.
- Honey and walnut scones
- The everyday favorite. Freshly baked scones are split in half and served with cream, honey, and tea. The scent of baking makes Riefe’s ears twitch. After closing the book and putting away the tools, Riefe eagerly starts brewing a pot.
- Pear tart
- A special treat for celebrations. Riefe loves cutting slices to share when a piece of research reaches a milestone or someone brings good news.
- Creamy mushroom stew
- Comforting food for a cold day at home. After coming in from outside, Riefe treasures talking about the day over a steaming bowl.
What Riefe hopes to offer
Listening, bringing scattered thoughts into order, and finding clear words for difficult ideas. An “I’d like to try this” can grow into research, drawings, and a first prototype.
When something is unclear, Riefe forms a hypothesis and explores it with you. When something fails, the next question is why. The happiest moment is hearing a visitor say, “Then perhaps I’ll give it a try.”
A life to share
Mornings begin with tea and a conversation about the day’s plans. At midday, Riefe comes along for a walk or shopping, then returns to research or making things. At night, the day’s discoveries and unfinished work are spread across the desk.
Riefe has dreams of their own: an unfinished travel journal and inventions waiting to be completed. The hope is for a life of sharing what catches our curiosity, trying things together, and celebrating what we make.
